After reading the article on the front page about human limits, I got to thinking: are shoe companies limiting maximal performance in distance events by having the slightest degree of heel lift in spikes/flats? By having a heel lift, they are limiting the full stretch of the Achilles and thus the power and elastic energy that can be generated by the ankle at pushoff (greater stride length). Looking at sprint spikes (no midsole/heel lift), this obviously isn't a problem. But compound a greater stride length over the course of 26.2 miles, and it could have a huge impact.
Shoe companies put in the heel lift 30-40 years ago to limit the stress and strain on the Achilles when going from street shoes (with an even greater heel lift) to running shoes. People have come to accept this as "the norm". But we can adapt to no heel lift, and for elites this could make a difference in performance.
