Never happened. Don's dad would have taken his hide off, and Don is not the kind of person to showboat. He's the least arrogant person you would ever meet.
In response to other comments, I have the IL state meet on tape; it was broadcast live back then, and they broadcast the entire 3200. His last lap was in 58 for the 3200. Keller's was 73. Tim had a good career as well, and I think he went under 9 minutes something like 7 times that year, though I could be wrong.
The comment that Newton burns his runners out is the most outrageous big lie there is. It is simply not true. Newton runners are everywhere; it is just that most people don't recognize them. Someone earlier today posted a list of the top 100 runners set for the upcoming Chicago marathon, and 2 runners there are York runners- Jim Akita and Mike Lucchesi. There are York runners scattered across the nation, in D1 and D3 colleges right now. In the 10 years since my kids left, I've seen probably 40 runners from York, and I don't really track the team like I used to. Newton has a number of former runners now coaching, including both my kids, as well as Akita, and several others in the Chicago area, and now into Iowa as well. He himself comments on this issue over on Dyestat; it might be worth seeing what he has to say about the criticism. I am not sure why he draws the hate; he's arguably done more for high school XC than any human alive. He is good for the sport. He has integrity, and he teaches integrity. For those of you who know him only be reputation, and base your comments on that, you really don't know what you are talking about. At 80, he is still going strong, and when he passes we will be poorer for the loss.
