Good, now you see why I piss on circus events like this one.

It sounds like Anton was going for the Course Record, and DNF'd because of it.
Tim Parr is a pretty fast dude. Ran some pretty respectable times at Western State. I think he's a sub 14 5k/29 10k guy.
sub 14?? really?

I usually wouldn't support ultras but dude, what prestigous events are you running at? Your local turkey trot doesn't count. Sub 15 won't get you to any national meet (when someone says sub 15 that means they were barely under it, I'd guess you haven't broken 14:50).
I don't know exact times and don't feel like digging for them, but he was a multiple all-american at Western State. He's a very good runner, not just an ultra-jogger as some might think.

No, I don't pay attention to stinky, hairy, spaced-out, granola-munching hippies doing speed hikes and making love to trees off in the wilderness.
Did you even read the book? That describes Cassidy to a tee for the entire second half.
Tim Parr was a D2 All-American for Western and has ran 29:30 somthing for 10k so dont even go there that these guys couldnt run fast times so they went the ultra route.
I don't report my races here because, like with the one this thread is about, I agree with you that they're nothing noteworthy in the sport.

Tony updated his blog and discusses his DNF, with the following quote: "On a good day, running 100 miles is f***ing hard. Period. On a bad day, it's borderline impossible."

Sounds like he had some major bathroom issues.
Sorry to everyone.

I didn't see a lot of people ripping on Usain Bolt's performances on the basis that he can't break 16 for 5k. What's the point of criticizing what someone can't do (or worse yet, what they can do, but which YOU don't think they can do) in an event very different from their specialty?
Guys training for 100 mile trail/mountain ultras don't spend a lot of time running 400s or 800s on the track.
uh, maybe they should?????
bet these guys never shower..
Tim Parr has run a couple of 2:28 marathons this year in the middle of his ultra and mountain running season. He also won Pikes Peak Marathon the week before Leadville.
Ultrarunners aren't the fastest over 5,10k or even marathon, but it's a different race and type of training.

Your ignorance of the sport is shining through spectacularly!
I would love to see you take that training approach into YOUR next 100miler.
Hey Lee Greenwood, this site is called "letsrun", not "letsrun800mtomarathon".
I started this thread for myself and others interested in the updates of the Leadville 100.
I did not intend for the thread to become a debate on the merits of ultrarunning. You could do that somewhere else.
Right here is fine, thanks. Maybe you should have kept this discussion on letspowerhike.com
