Agreed, I think top 8 is a possibility with his progression this year. 5th may be a stretch but who knows? Anything can happen on the day.

"Watching Rupp's race, I'd say his 13:18i AR was at least as, if not more, impressive than Teg's 13:04 anyway."
In a thread filled with dumb comments, this one might just take the cake.

Seriously? Why? How many times has an American run faster than Rupp's indoor mark? 0. How many times has anybody run faster indoors? 13.
How about Tegs 5K? How many times has an American run faster than 13:04? 9. How many times has anybody run faster outdoors? 283 according to IAAF lists (this number may actually be substantially larger since I noticed that they were missing 4 of Kennedy's marks at 13:02, 13:03, 13:03 and 13:04 so who knows how many they missed for other runners.)
Now I fully understand that the indoor 5K is not contested nearly as often as the outdoor 5K, but Rupp also was not in an all out race hanging on. He was in complete control and closed in :27 on a 200 track and i believe at :55.x or :56.x for the last quarter and nearly won it against a guy who can Tegs best ever mark on a regular basis.
I'm not saying that it makes Rupps race clearly better than Tegs, but it's a valid argument and a justifiable OPINION.
I can understand someone arguing for Tegs mark, even though I wouldn't agree.
Teg:
"When I ran 13:04 (in Stockholm in 2006) I perfectly managed the line," he says. "Physiologically, I was riding it the entire race, but never once stepped over it."
Rupp never appeared to be riding the line and in fact kept having to back off it when the pace slowed in his 13:18i.
Keep in mind that the top four 5K runners in history have these bests:
12:49.60 - indoor - Kenenisa Bekele - outdoor - 12:37.35
12:50.38 - indoor - Haile Gebrselassie - outdoor - 12:39.36
12:51.48 - indoor - Daniel Komen - outdoor - 12:39.74
13:06.72 - indoor - Sileshi Sihine - outdoor - 12:47.04
All between 11 - 19 seconds faster outdoors. Looking at the top 15 indoor 5K marks this would be the rule and not the exception. Bekele, Geb and Komen were all going for WR's when they set their marks indoors and out so I think that is a pretty accurate snapshot of the difference between indoors and out. The fact that Rupp was NOT going all out or chasing pace in Fayetville is what makes it pretty impressive. All just my opinion obviously.
Off the subject a bit but one thing I thought was interesting is that Rupp ran 13:40 indoors in in Fayeteville in 2007 and went on to run 27:33 for the 10K that year. He's now 22 seconds faster over 5K indoors. Seems like he should be ready for a nice PR in the 10K in a good race.

Rupp is overrated and is going to get man handled at wc's. Just wait and see fanboys.
Can you give us an idea of what "man handled" would look like so we can keep an eye out for it?
How in the hell is he facing more east africans ever before? For the last freakin time, he has raced nothing but college guys. Do you fanboys understand that? C.O.L.L.E.G.E G.U.Y.S. You guys are so damn delusional. Rupp has done jack sh**t on world stage and yet in one year its a guarentee that he'll medal? But I know I know. He's done the 30/40 ran the 1500m, 5000m, 10000m with all those heats and blah blah blah blah. You guys do realize that YOU'RE the reason why everyone seems to dislike him right? Please say yes. Oh and btw.... Fernandez will destroy all of galen rupps marks anyway so its really nothing to get excited over. Too much hype is not good.
Easy just look at the 2007 wcs and 2008 olympic finals?

"why everyone seems to dislike him"?
There are very few people who "dislike" Rupp at this point, but they tend to be the ones with the loudest barks and the most to bark about. Furthermore this is a discussion about performance, not personality. There may have been a couple people who said that the strongly believed he was going to medal at worlds in this entire discussion, most have discussed that he has improved in fitness and that he should improve upon his 11th and 13th place international finishes and somewhere around 8th is a strong possibility. Some more, some less. This is not unreasonable at all.
You're reading comprehension and understanding is truly terrible. Here's what I said:
"He's facing more top East Africans than ever before in the event that is most dominated by East Africans."
Why are you referencing college races in regards to the world championships where (insert what I said above right here).
Secondly, why are you using a term like fan in a negative and derogatory manner? I would expect most people who come to a discussion board on running are fans of running and fans of those who are the best at it, especially when they represent our country. The "fanboy" comment is so tired because 98% of us are fans, making that the norm. The 2% which are haters are the negative here, yes they make a lot of noise, but they are still a tiny minority.
If you're going to be an ass and make this kind of verbal assault on people for having a discussion you should at least be cautious and be correct:

What about 9th?
8th?
7th?
6th?
When exactly does he escape manhandling? And why exactly are you hoping he does get manhandled? Rival college runner? Not a US runner?
Ok genius. So you put one race up there where he race daba and some other africans and said that he's racing a bunch of top east africans. I sorry but daba and geneti are not the top east africans. You're comprehension skills seem to be terrible and you need to get off rupps j's for a moment and just think about what you are posting. I'm not disliking him in any way shape or form. I said that his "fanboys" (yes like you) are the main reason why people just get sick of him. Saying he's going to do this and that and a bunch of other stuff. You constatly bring up daba and then compare dabas improvements to estimate rupps improvements which is dumb to say the least because EVERY runner is different and do not improve the same as others. Then (my god) you compare rupp to bekele saying that since bekele improve so much when he was young by racing european meets than there is no reason why rupp can't. This is the most idiotic thing you post out of all your ramblings about rupp. Bekele and rupp are WORLDS apart and rupp will never get on that type of level. And the reason why bekele was able to improve that fast going from 13:13 to 12:52 is the fact that he ran a freakin 7:30.xx at 19 YEARS of age. Someone that runs that type of time while being so young is going to have some huge breakthroughs. I'm a fan of u.s distance running but I don't think rupp will be a factor on world stage at all at least not at distances from (800-10000m). Why is it that everytime I point this out I'm not considered a fan? I'm just simply stating the truth. The only person that I see being a legitimate factor on world stage is fernandez (3:55i FRESHMAN year and already a NCAA champ). Plus he has way more raw talent than rupp ever had at the age of 18. It took rupp five years to get his NCAA title while being coached by the whole nike corporation which is almost illegal itself. But keep suckin rupp off some more by posting results from a meet which was pretty much meaningless.

Yeah, because there's no way someone like, say, Fernandez has been hyped more than Rupp. Fernandez isn't durable enough to tackle Rupp's 10k, and Rupp will probably be putting his 5k out of Fernandez's reach in the near future as well. Fernandez will never run the marathon, Rupp probably will.
So getting 11th at world cross isn't an indicator that he will never be a great 5k/10k guy. Fernandez 13:25 for 5k as a true freshman and rupp 13:37 for 5k his freshman year (while being coached by Alsal) and you honestly think rupp will be the better of the two? Like I said, rupp fans are DELUSIONAL to say the least.

Fernandez gets injured too much, and you have already made the point that AlSal is a far superior coach. Even now, Fernandez has less upside than Rupp does, unless he can find a way to stay healthy.

SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP! Seriously. Do you ever stop and listen to yourself? Because you sound utterly pathetic.
I cannot speak for everybody but I am pretty sure practically nobody here hates Rupp. Very few even care about Rupp. People are just reacting to the stupid reasoning that makes Rupp a 13:00 or 27:05 runner. Not to mention the more idiotic leap of logic that based on these phantom times he is a contender for a medal. I guarantee that if you just said "I think he has a shot" nobody would even bat an eyelash. But no, you have to paste the results of some indoor race for like the 100th time as if we have never heard of it before. And then, when people disagree with you you say that we are A.unknowledable B.jealous C.haters. Stop making Rupp the victim. It's the YOU and the likes we hate, not Rupp.
Oh, and by the way, I guarantee you that if "fanboys" started posting that based on German's 3:55, INDOORS!, on a BANKED TRACK!, IN MARCH!, after being injured!, all ALONE!, that he is a contender for a world champs medal, they would be called retards as well.
I seriously laughed at the image of you all red faced and angry a people having a discussion on a message board. Wow, people with optimism discussing a talented runner on the rise and you feel like you are in some position to control or stop the optimism with a 3rd grader like rant of near madness. Seems like you are combining several peoples varied opinions in to one response too, which is pretty silly.
Good luck with the hate fest and the pessimism, that should get you far.
FYI, if you were following the discussion the reason the last poster showed those results is, ohh never mind it's a waste with you.
I predict you'll fly off the handle even harder this time, making an even bigger ass of yourself and crush your teeth as your head goes through the ceiling! If I were you I wouldn't bother because it'll be a wasted effort but with guys like you it'll probably happen in 3.....2.....

Its good to be optimistic but damn you guys are taking it way too far. Did the guy hurt your feelings because he gets tired people sucking rupps d**k so much? Please tell me.
