I used to coach at C.W. Post and I spent a couple of summers putting all the track and field records back together after a long period of not being kept. Vin didn't rank in the top 10 in any events that I recall but that steeple time surely would have put him 3rd or 4th on the All time list there (the records were really incomplete so we were alwayss looking for new info).
He did tell me that he was an average runner who worked hard. I want to say off the top of my head that he ran under 27 minutes for 8k and was usually the 6th or 7th man in XC. They had some really strong teams under Chernock at that point which I think Ron Stonitsch helped get rolling with his success. With little support from the admin C.W. Post turned over coaches frequently however which did give Vin a great opportunity. I think he helped coach one of the teams there to a pretty high finish at the NCAA's XC meet before moving on to Dartmouth.
I'll see if I can find any of the lists, but I may have purged all that stuff. Honestly, I was able to look at him and say he does a great job coaching so maybe I can have some success as well.
