I think that I recall reading something about Jim Ryun's mom saying the same thing after he came in second in an 880 or mile race before his huge break through. I just remember reading that he ran freakin awesome just to get second, go home, tell his mom he lost (with an outstanding time) and she said, "That's ok, you will do better next time."
I think I remember this one! Ryun's running AAU stuff, the summer after his soph year of HS. He's in the open mile, up against a college stud (Cal Elmore?), and runs like 4:08 behind him, for a soph-class record. (We're talking 1963, folks.)
Ryun got very sick after the race (as he often did), but was able to recover in time for the 880, where he again runs with grownups and takes fifth with something in the 1:53? range. Greatest double ever run by a HSer to that time, and he's only a 16-year-old who just finished tenth grade.
So he gets home really late and just goes to bed without seeing the folks. Mom makes him breakfast the next morning and asks how the meet went. "Oh, I was second and fifth." "That's all right, dear, you'll do better next time."
