The best and ridiculous complements/remarks you recieved before and after a race

When I was doing a 5 mile this Thanksgiving I was passing the slower runners at about the 4 mile mark (It was an out and back course) by now I was locked in a head to head battle with this other guy, as we passed the galloway and penguin worshippers I heard one of them say "See? Atleast WERE the ones having the real fun." I'll admit, right then with a mile to go wasnt that fun, but afterwards getting my award was. And I hope that guy had fun running his 50 minute 5 mile.

"How far was THAT marathon?"

I wasn't the recipient of the stupid question, I just overheard it. I was doing a warmup before a 3.5 mile race last year and as I come up on these two guys also warming up I hear one ask the other, "So how far is this race?"

I'm thinking to myself, why did this guy just enter a race and not know the distance??

So the other guy responds to Mr. Clueless that its a little more than a 5K. Needless to say, neither of those idiots beat me in the race.

"Your legs are longer than his, you should beat him"

Well Geb is like 8 inches shorter than me, guess I have his milk too.

Best: My HS track coach, "Run hard, turn left"

At the District track meet my senior year in HS, I was running the 3200 and locked in a battle with another runner. As we launched into a kick around the last corner, my coach started yelling at me, "You're gonna lose! You're gonna lose!"

He was right.

While not one to use this kind of language, in my early 20s after winning a road race, a 30-something attractive woman came up to me and said, "I've got a van over there, will you f*ck me?"

I said, "I'm married." She looked at my wedding ring and said, "I can see that." I told her no, she touched my shoulder and I got the hell out of there.

Did you win it? No I was 5th? 5th! you must be out of shape what did you run a 13:30? a local 5K! yeah right!

Some idiot asked me after a cross country race did we have track meets everyday?

Before a local 5k, a gut asks the RD during the pre-race instructions, "Will there be GU gel at the aid stations?"

I finished second at a local 5K in a slow time, but I ran as hard as I possibly could that day. It was an out and back course, so that everyone could see the runners in front of them on the way back. It had to be obvious to anyone looking at my face that I was running as hard as I could.

After the race some guy said to me "Its easy for guys like you. You don't realize how tough it is for us back of the packers." I didn't know what to say, just looked at him like he was nuts.

after one of the runners on my team won an xc-invite he broke out in tears of joy while walking from the finish line to his warmups....a lady came over and put her hand his shoulder and comfortingly said "its ok, you'll do better next time"

I think that I recall reading something about Jim Ryun's mom saying the same thing after he came in second in an 880 or mile race before his huge break through. I just remember reading that he ran freakin awesome just to get second, go home, tell his mom he lost (with an outstanding time) and she said, "That's ok, you will do better next time."

What Flagpole failed to mention is: that the van doubled as this ladies home down by the river. hahahaha, just kidding with you Flagpole.

I ran a 7 miler years ago in Boston. Bill Rodgers was there basically doing a tempo run. I was ahead of him for a mile or so then he went by and won the race. I think I finished about 10th? I was pleased with my effort. At the finish my Father came up to me and said, "what happened"? I said what do you mean? He said,"you were ahead of Rodgers, what happened"? I started to explain then said never mind....

KU Relays maybe 8 years ago, I'm a masters runner but running the mens 5k. I run decent, middle pack and race this young kid for most of the race, pulling ahead the last couple of laps. We finish and he walks up from behind me, extends his hand and says " Good Race Sir".

Well I know he was taught to show respect for his elders but at that moment this elder wanted to punch him and say "Sir? We are competitors damn it! I just beat you!"

Sir? Geez I must be getting old. Next stop Denny's showing my AARP card for the discount.
