Our sport is not popular because it's boring.

That is the main reason.

People doing stuff like celebrating the last 50m liven it up and put emotion into a sport that otherwise lacks it.

Perfect example is Bolt winning the Olympics.

One of the reasons it got a lot of air time on TV because it was exciting to watch him go crazy celebrating during the race.

It's fun to see people display emotion.

People remember that, not the same old song and dance of crossing the line, putting your arms up and thanking god.

I can't remember the name of the Polish vaulter who won in Moscow but that shot of him coming down off of 18-10/11 for the gold while giving the Soviet crowd a gesture was one of my all time favorites.

While that actually was taunting, I don't think Coghlan was when he clenched his fists as he passed the Russian to win his first ever international Gold in Helsinki in 1983.

Beyond my childhood heroes, I have seen well over 100 prep and collegiate runners celebrate more enthusiastically than Wyner did today.

This is a bad day for the sport. You can't get kids to come out for the only sport that allows no emotion whatsoever.

No. He's looking back, pompously throwing up the 1, opening up his arms, looking back again...that's not emotion, that's showboating.

It doesn't matter if it was the Trials or conference meet.

Rules apply to every race so I ask again,

Also it appears from the video he didn't bow to rub anything in. He bowed as a response to booing from the crowd.

Some kids who never win dual meets would be as happy winning a dual meet as another who constantly wins national championships winning another championship. Obviously to wyner Heps was a big deal.

You're FUCKING DUMB! The rules that govern a college meet aren't the exact same as the rules that govern a pro road race. Do yourself, Wyner, and Cornell all a favor and STFU right now.

Unsportsmanlike conduct (which is what he was DQ'ed for) is a universally present in all running events.

There's a little difference (okay, a lot) between making the Olympic team in a win and winning a middling college conference meet.

That's not showboating. It's making sure someone does not pass him before the finish. That would suck after being HAPPY about winning the race. He got DQed for the bow. The bow he did toward booing spectators. Shows how stupid and lame the Ivy League is.

OK, I'll say it again. Showboating on the home straight was disgraceful and undoubtedly embarrassed a decent chunk of the people affiliated with the Cornell program but would never have resulted in a DQ. Giving a bow to the Dartmouth fans brought it to the line that I can't imagine there wasn't a single person in Cornell gear who felt at least a twinge of embarrassment. Wyner deserved to have his ass beat in the parking lot for that, and (if he is a captain, which is unlikely) have his captaincy revoked by Rojo. But it still wasn't worthy of a DQ. The officials DQ'ed him based on their collective hatred for him which he has done everything possible to deserve. But that still shouldn't be grounds for a DQ. If Maag had broken free on the homestretch and started showboating he would not have gotten DQ'ed. The officials used Wyner's actions as an excuse to get back at him for being a punk, which raises questions about the qualification of these people to be officials.

Wyner has never done anything in his running career which would compare to winning the Heps 1500, this should have been one of the highlights of his life, something that he could show the video of to his grandkids. He ruined the possibility of showing this to his grandkids with his antics and now he won't even get a medal to show them. I'm glad the opportunity was taken away from him even if I don't really approve of the reasoning by which he was DQ'ed.

Also shows how much class the Cornell athletes pick up from their coaches.

I've always been a big fan of "Act like you've been here before, act like you aren't surprised to win."

I forget if that was advice from my high school wrestling coach, or if I'm stealing it from somewhere else, and giving him credit, but I have always liked the idea of it.

This is a classic "Turning a molehill into a mountain" thingy complete with a lack of common sense, apparently incompetent judges, personal dislikes taking over etc. etc.
