Gentleman, I haven't had time to look at the entries that could be Ryan's competition. Could anyone comment on who are the big boys in the race that Ryan will have to deal with? Thanks, I'll check back. I hope he wins it also!

A few thoughts.
There is no such thing as a random letsrunner.. that could be Renato.. Tinman.. Nick Willis.. Shaheen.. just because someone is anonymous does not make their opinion invalid.
There are many people on here who could quite happily claim credentials to tell Ryan Hall what to do.
I think having a tough time trial like that where you get "in over your head" is good a few weeks out, especially if you don't have tough racing to bring your form up. He can blow up and he loses nothing. Better to do it there than in Boston.
38:08 is 4:46/mile. Why is this being made such a big-deal? For a 13:16 5ker, sub-hour half-thoner, and 2:06 marathoner? This sounds like typical threshold training, given the credentials/ability.

3) why will it take until Mon to post a video? If you have so much free time that you are videoing other people and then creaming about them on networking sites ... why can't you post the stuff in 15 min.?
Josh needs to record an intro, and it will take several days to get his hair just right.

robert cheruiyiot the 4 time boston maraton champ and course record holder 2:07:14.
a different marathoner named robert cheruiyiot who is age 22 who ran 2:07:21 to win a marathon in germany a few months ago in his first race outside of kenya.
evans cheruiyiot consistent sub 1 hour half marathoner has won both of his full marathons including chicago in the heat in 2:06:25.
abebe dinkesa who will be running his first marathon who has run 26:30 for 10k on the track.
almost forgot deriba merga 4th in olympics personal best 2:06:38.
hall beat mergia by 21 seconds in london with his 2:06:17.
also others that have run 2:08-2:10 who will be trying to make a name for themselves.
in summary 5-8 men who can win and hall is 1 of them.
Anyone going to Boston to watch and cheer on Ryan?
I am not criticizing the workout as it could make perfect sense. However, a marathon is not a track event where you can judge someones fitness by any one workout. Here are a few questions that are important in trying to figure out what that workout means.
Was this in the middle of a 150 mile week?
Was this run in the middle of a 20 plus mile day or even a 20 mile workout?
Did Ryan run a minimum of 20 miles the day before the workout?
Was the workout done at 85% effort?
Was Ryan comfortable in running his 20-22 miles the following day?
If athletes taper for workouts during a marathon, it makes the workouts meaningless (I am not saying that is what Ryan is doing). It is important to recognize that if you do not have all of the facts surrounding a marathon workout, it does not mean a thing.
What would be the way to train? And what would be good times?
Clues are in the post above.
No one runs Boston well in their debut. Culpepper ran 5 minutes faster the second time he ran it. Meb got beat up because others had more experience on the course. Same with Kastor. Bill Rodgers has said that every year he ran the course he became better at the nuances of the course. Greg Meyer said that he could not of won Boston had he not lived on the course.
Why will Ryan Hall be different than pretty much every other American marathoner?
Superior talent is not the crucial element when it comes to the Boston course.
Good luck Ryan. I hope that you prove history wrong.

1) why is Josh Cox reporting this workout for another runner?
2) why is Josh Cox reporting any workout on Twitter, Facebook and taking video?
3) why will it take until Mon to post a video? If you have so much free time that you are videoing other people and then creaming about them on networking sites ... why can't you post the stuff in 15 min.?
4) a first 5k under 14:00 means sub-4:30 first three miles and ... the last 5 miles at 4:56.
Shockingly, he ran the last 5 miles at (gasp!) roughly his marathon pace. What a puzzler... we all know this is obviously not how to train for a marathon, and yet somehow it seems to make sense.
This is a smart workout if you break down the race.
Hall can only win if he is willing to take it out hard and then settle into pace. If Hall and Cheryout enter the Newton hills together, then Hall will be killed. Hall needs to get away early. This workout was set up with that race straegy in mind. If the race goes out slower than 63:30 at the halfway point, Hall can't win.
um, so are saying that besides all of the other top guns Hall has to face, there are 3 guys with the same last name (cheruiyiot ) with credentials/potential as good as or better than his? That's nuts.
A truly studly field indeed. I knew of the two Cheruiyots but didn't realize the rest of the top level talent. It seems as if Boston is get a little of it's depth back.
A podium finish for Hall would be a great accomplishment in this field. Of course, no one wants anything but 1st place for Mr. Hall.
In regards to the workout, I agree with the poster who said that this type of run is necessary for success at Boston. You need to practice blasting your quads downhill and then settling into goal pace.
Hopefully it will be a cool day, as he is primed for a great race.

He just posted on Twitter that he is going to get a spray-tan right now, so the video should be up soon.
Isn't there a third Robert Cheruiyot? Ran a fast marathon in Spain or Portugal last year I think?
Boston should get him too. Then they should go to work on the Daniel Komens.

4500 feet to be exact, and the area he runs. we have no idea if the first 5k was flat and then he started to hit some up hills. and he raised even more altitude.
The reason that gives us that hint is because josh quoted ryan as saying, i want to bang my legs up a little before boston. so im sure ryan picked a route that ended up having some massive hills. where as josh already said there were several 300 m hills...where ryan surged...

Rob DeCastella did alright...2:07:51 new course record in 1986.
