To Boingo:
Why do you have a problem with breathing harder than you need? The mile is mostly an aerobic race. You need the oxygen to stay aerobic, or certainly delay the anaerobic feeling. As I said in my post, while the others are beginning to become anaerobic, you are still aerobic.
I broke the race into 4 segments, as you did. My segments each had a purpose. Go back and read it. It is intended to get the most out of the four laps while feeling better than your competitors, not by dying less. You give "brilliant" advice such as "suck it up" "start to hurt" and "your entire body is on fire". My advice has her feeling good while the others are doing your method of "starting to hurt".
Yes, of course you will be hurting if you run an all out mile, but you can run the race with a smarter plan and minimize the pain compared to the rest of the field.

So...your smarter plan is...losing?
Why do you want to feel better? Why does that matter? By gauging the amount of pain you're in, you are able to figure out whether you are maintaining pace or slowing down. And if you maintain a steady pace and it hurts like hell, you're basically running an all out mile.
And then you win. Or at least maximize your chances, if you're up against a superior field.
Save the feeling good for after you hit the line, not before it.
Okay Oingo Boingo. If we race, and we're together with 200 to go, and you're hurting, and I'm feeling good, I will beat you every time. You can do your "suck it up" routine, and "feel like you're on fire" and all your other "I'm so tough" crap. I will run a smarter mile and beat you every time. Every time.
So, by breathing hard, which you critisized, I will remain aerobic longer. Your pain starts earlier. My pain starts later. Yes, I still make myself hurt, don't get me wrong, but, as I said earlier, I'll beat you every time.
I hope this young lady tries both of our methods. She will cusre your stupidity, and thank me for helping her win.
I think if you try to hyperventilate all the way, you'll probably pass out before you get to the finish.
Also it upsets the acid/base balance in your system.

How did you do in the mile at your district meet? Time? Place? Splits?
Results?
Results: she did fine but the crowd was stunned as birdlegs passed out due to oxygen debt from breathing hard for 4 and a half minutes after outkicking boingo because he felt better.
