It's official: to make NCAA's as a distance runner you have to run at UW

East Tennessee State University is capable of hosting a meet like this. It is a better venue. There is TONS of seating and a 300 meter track.

Unfortunately, all the good runners are from Colorado and on West. Sure, there are exceptions, but the good distance runners are in the West, the good sprinters are in the South.

Unless you can afford to go to these ridiculously fast venues, live near them, or run much faster than the people that can afford to go to them you aren't going to Nationals.

Can there not be an agreement on 200m tracks only?

So 98% of the entrants in the 800m-5000m at the NCAA Championships next month will have gotten their standard at Washington? Or are you saing that all of those who achieved their standard(s) elsewhere had only a 2% chance to do so? I'll be curious to see your numbers on this.

The Dempsey is not banked.

To call ETSU a better venue is just silly. First of all the track is 27 meters shorter, which is not better for speed generally. The surface is not faster than UW. So good luck attracting the top talent to a slower track, but at least there are TONS of seats.

Washington has a non banked 300 meter track. Those times over 400 meters don't relate to times run on 200 meter banked tracks. Doesn't the NCAA take this into account, or do they ignore the Washington times?

Maybe more schmucks should get AUTO qualifiers on 200m banked tracks?

Or maybe UW should limit the number of very good runners they allow to compete at their meets, or not have rabbits go out fast enough to string multiple heats of multiple races along to fast times?

i think to quiet my sobbing my school would have to get much better runners so i could stop being sobby and start being haughty.

but seriously, there is nothing in the nation like the husky invite, and that's frustrating when all it takes is a time to get to ncaa's.

to quiet my sobbing they would stop running huge time-trialed rabbited races with tons of decent-great runners on a track that is clearly vastly superior to every other track in the country. watch some of these guys with ridiculous new pr's in their conference meet. we'll see that they aren't really that good at competing, or doubling, but line them up like mt. sac and they seem incredible.

15 guys went under 8:00 in the 3k. That's pretty ridiculous. UW really seems like the place to run fast.

Kentucky has a 290m track - definitely close enough for the east coasters. What's wrong with this facility?

When's the last time anyone ran as fast as Fernandez or Coe just did in Seattle? I can't find one. Are the stadium records posted anywhere?

Look at the record books and you will realize that Arkansas has *at least* as fast a track as UW. Case in point: last weekend's 5000.

One other point: Between the Portland and Eugene-based athletes (including UO), Dempsey is Nike's indoor facility, de facto. This drives the competition level up overall, at least for the Husky Invite (theother meets are not nearly as deep).

they don't host meets late enough in the winter

some ppl aren't in shape enough to run a blazingly fast race in january
