Rupp would get a LOT more cred if he'd won even half of the titles he's been in contention for through his high school and college years (discounting USATF and IAAF/IOC meets) and as a result more people would think highly of him and praise him. What it comes down to is that he doesn't have much of a killer instinct, he doesn't want it badly enough to hurt even more to beat someone. Pre's will to win drove him to think and do some foolish things, but he definitely had an incredibly strong will to win. Rupp just doesn't. I think maybe he's too caught up in his own image and trying to look good (he has an entourage of handlers and fanboys telling him how great he is) and as a result has missed out on cultivating the inner fire needed to compete fiercely enough to win.
