From May through Sept 30th he ran , what?? 6 races, he was hardly over worked.
It is not the number of races, it is when the training is done and when the peaks are reached. His post-XC schedule was focused on the Trials and the Olympics. I would guess that he has training runs that are as hard as many training races (e.g., top 4 guys running in a pack, top guy is well within himself). I think he and his coach know more about training and peaking than you do. They also know more about his objectives than you do.
