Just shifted training from mornings to afternoons. Running slower for the same effort due to the heat. Seems less specific, somehow. Does anyone know which conditions enable better preparation for a marathon in cool weather?

Better to prepare for a hot one, regardless of the actual conditions. Run in heat + layers.
Firstly I'd Ask Benji Durden what he'd do.
I prepped for 2 NH marathons during hot weather, 1 wound up being run in temps which dropped nearly 40 degrees overnight owing to Hurricane Hugo's clearing the deck, so to speak, and allowing typical NH mountain air to circulate in. I got a pretty bad cold after that one.
Then 2nd one wound up being run in slightly cooler but MUCH more humid conditions: I blew up and hit the wall in that one. Haven't been the same since.
