Lagat's equipped to get the record, but the fact that he's gone for it and not gotten it, is very telling. You think every good distance runner's going to run marathons like Hall has?? Well they're not going to run 12:58 either.
He's never gone for it. When has he been in a 5000m that had good rabbits through 3000m? Both times he's broken 13 he finished with a 52 last lap -- something Kennedy could have never done. Take him through 3000m in 7:40ish and as long as it doesn't become a slow, tactical affair, you'll see 12:50 or so.

19.32 = 38.64 sec./400m ( = 8:03.0 5000m pace )
Komen ran 12:39 im pretty sure.

Lagat ran 12:59. You think he just decided to not go for 12:58??
http://www.mensracing.com/athletes/interviews/2005/bernardlagat.html"When I ran 12:59, I felt it was a really tough race." (Then Lagat explains this as part of the reason why he focused on the 1500 for a while).
