What is so "gutsy" about running that slow? Any way you slice it, the object of the race is to get to the finish line as fast as possible, right?
Crappy distance announcing as always. With the addition of Ed Eystone, I was hoping for some real commentary and insight into people like Solinsky. He could have stepped up and took distance commentary to another level, but he let me down.
Ed, we are relying on you to overcome the years and years of missed commentary and promotion for US distance running. Gotta step it up.

Post of the Day?
The announcers only care about who wins. They didn't even acknowledge that Price was in high school. The winner crosses the line and the camera goes to him/her standing there, meanwhile others are crossing the line. I had no clue that Webb ran 3:55.
The coverage has to be more inclusive. Riley dropped out, I was watching him and I never knew what happened. I have an interest in him because in high school he ran in a meet at my track. Just a little personal, human interest.

not really, the object of the race is to get to the finish line before any of the others do. There are gutsy ways to try and do this, and there are pussy ways to try and do this
Solinsky ran well but was only in it because they allowed him to be in it. They were all setting up for the kick while Solinsky was already kicking. In the last 150, the winner put 3.4 seconds on Solinsky and the 2nd and 3rd place guys put around 2.5 seconds on him. He never had a chance. Fun to watch for a few seconds.

Woah- you mean that a runner with perhaps a slight chance of placing in the top 10 in the race dropped out!? On top of that, you had a personal interest in him!?
THEY DROPPED THE BALL THERE, GOOD SIR!!!!
Did anyone else besides me notice that they went through the first lap in 58 and the 800 in 2:02
not surprised solinsky is awsome as shown by his college career
Does anyone remember a few years back when Mottram claimed he closed his 5k in 1:55 for the last 800, and then he proclaimed himself in WR shape because he didn't think Bekele could do that? Maybe that was before Bekele closed in 1:53, I don't know?
Love him or hate him, big pussy or "gutsy," that dude is one entertaining mofo.
The problem is that NBC wants to have 4-5 commentators for an event that requires only 2 at most. A well-versed track announcer can call all of the events without the need for event-specialist announcers like Larry Rawson or what's his name from Trinidad and Tabago.
The announcers of yesteryear...from the 50s,60s,70s...were fully capable of this. I bet Howard Cossell could have jumped in there and done a solo job pretty well.
Just because you were an athlete in the sport in question, it does not make you a great announcer.

Non-Africans beat non-Africans in distance running all the time and it's not headline news. When a non-African beats the Africans then it's an achievemnt of great consequence. Mottram is only rated because he's beaten and competed with to Africans like Geb and Bekele. Now he's been out of form for along term. Solinsky beating him is of no consequence. Solinsky emulating his previous achievements would be exciting.
In other words, Bekele is the benchmark. Mottram has reached it in the past but that doesn't make him the benchmark.
my favorite part of the race was mottram boxing solinsky in just after the bell. solinsky shoved mottram out of the way, mottram took a look at who dared to move him, and slowly fell deeper into the field. solinsky went about his business and tried for the lead in the backstretch. mottram looked awful. solinsky looked good. lagat looked awesome. and yes, i was there.
yep, quite the lovely woman right there.

That is so correct; two announcers for each race would be great (send Carol and her "sprint friends" out for nachos.
Then I agree with a previous poster; please show at least the top 6-8 finishers and continue talking about the winner if you want to, but we have no interest in seeing the winner standing there, etc. after they cross the finish line!!!!!!!!!!
