I thought it was a interesting fact about the boy from the chocolate factory. I loved that movie growing up. I'm assuming you were one of the people who didn't get a golden ticket.
My family loved "Charlie & the Chocolate Factory" too. Getting back to Mary Decker - it was an awful way for her and Zola Budd to end their careers - one of the worst track nightmares!
I see you haven't spent much time on letsrun.

The one and only time I ever beat Mary Decker was at the blue Angels cross country meet in , lets see, either 75 or 76 (the trophy is in the attic somewhere). I actually outkicked her, and I never had a "kick". that compartment syndrome is some nasty stuff. She ended up running much much faster later on. It was fun to watch.

Will you please do me a favor and go up in your attic and tell me what year is on the trophy...I really want to know...
Ok, I went up and put away some xc uniforms that some of my kids were really late turning in this year and found the trophy It says " Blue Angels Sports Festival , womens 5000m 1976, B.M McQuarrie PC sponsor, a nice silver bowl on a wood base. I moved to Oregon in jan, '77 and that was one of the few cali momentos I took with me because, it wasn't every day you could win a race with Decker in it. I remember the course being flat, grassy, like a city park. Wow , that was a long time ago!

I was at that race and it was held at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley, Ca...
In 1976 Mary was 18...and coming off injuries....one thing I admire about Mary; she will show up at a race not fit and run anyway...
Not to take away anything from anybody who wins.
come to think about it....I do not remember anybody beating Mary on this course...but what ever..It was a while back.
to put it in perspective, I had only broken 5 in the mile once when I ran against the much faster Decker and my pr for 5k on the track came in '78 for Oregon, only 17:03. Mary was definitely not at her best. Erin Forbes ALWAYS outkicked me every time I was in a race with her(even on the roads, in portland in our 30's), but I was 3-0 in races against both Priscilla Welch and Kim Jones. in sport, on any given day, anything can happen. I tell my kids always to challenge themselves with the best competition they can find and just see what happens. Sometimes you have very good days. and sometimes ,you suck. thats what makes it interesting.
I saw her run the 880 at a high school meet in 76 at Santiago competing for what I remember was Tustin HS, but it sounds like it was probably Orange. Anyway she was running against the varsity boys...came in last and I was wondering what all the hype was about. Didn't realize she was running injured.
I know your post is from 12 years ago, but if there is any chance you are on here, I'd love to talk to you. Was there any signs of PED use in HS? Please email me at
rober@letsrun.com?
Do you think she's capable of that type of stuff from a moral standpoint?
Here's an S.I. article from when Mary was 15 years old. Bill Graves was described as an intelligent, 4:17.2 miler. I remember a caption for a photograph of them in the article, referring to him as a " fair to middling" miler. Our school record was 4:19 at the time and we thought that was kind of funny.
https://vault.si.com/vault/1974/04/22/mary-mary-not-contraryRojo, really? No one knew about PEDs back in the 70s, especially high school girls. Your question is waaay out of bounds.
With Paula Radcliffe showing up on a WADA list , I would be more interested if there were signs of doping when a Brojo paced her .
So interesting! The great ones have passion that fights off the weakness of normal people.
You do realize that as a 12-yr old, she ran a sub-3:10 marathon the day after running a sub-5:05 mile?
Some say it was a growth spurt between yrs 15 and 16, in combination with switching from grass, dirt and cinder tracks over to road running, that contributed to her injury issues.

At 15, "Decker wins the 800 in a dual meet against the USSR. Bodychecked off the track during a relay, Mary gets up and throws the baton at the muscular Russian offender." Maybe she asked questions about their appearances after that meet.

Wow. Just wow.
This really is beneath you.
