El G. 2:46.79 in Sevilla 1999 World Champs
If i remember correctly, the 400/800 splits weren't too outrageous in the 2002 Rieti race ... about 54.XX, 1:49low for the pacesetter; I really wish El-guerrouj would have tried a faster pace a couple more times, to see if he could learn to handle it (I was really excited to see him split 2:44).
Speaking of splits, that same season El-G was in a 1500, were the race splits were 51.X, 58.X, 59.X, 52.X for about a 3:26.8ish (and he wasn't too far back at 400) ... I think that's quite indicative of his 2002 fitness.

Johnny Gray ran 2:48 in a workout/time trial in 1984. (I ran 3:05 in the same TT). I know it's not the same as a race, but it was damn fast.
I was just thinking about Bayi. I think there was one 1500 he took out in 51 at 400m.

Some people became confused because the book "The Milers" juxtaposed numbers when listing Ryun's final 1320 (2:47.8). Very impressive on a slow track, with the track temperature over 100 degrees in LA's horrible smog of the 1960's.
I think this is an interesting question and, using a bit of speculation and interpolation, the potential fastest time possible by ElG was somewhere around 2:41
_800 = 12.51/100 M = 100.11 sec = 1:41.11
_900 = 12.95/100 M
1000 = 13.20/100 M = 132 sec = 2:11.96
1100 = 13.33/100 M
1200 = 13.45/100 M = 161.4 sec = 2:41.4
1300 = 13.56/100 M
1400 = 13.66/100 M
1500 = 13.73/100 M = 206 sec = 3:26
1609 = 13.86/100 M = 223 sec = 3:43.13
Intersting that ElG's 1500 WR, which is a bit better than his mile record on the performance charts, also had a better 1200 split, (2:46.34 vs 2:47.91), which says something about the importance of even pacing.

Plugging in the 2000 meter WR, better shows how the 1500 jumps out as a slightly better WR than the mile.
