does anyone know?
not sure it really matters. guys like pre had a natural talent, brought out by hard work that couldn't be duplicated by 99% of us if we did his workouts down to a t. suffice to say, that he worked out HARD, from everything I've read. Pre didn't do alot of slow miles, even in high school
Here is the link to the article in running times that had a glimpse of his training....you will probably have to cut and paste the link

Excellent article, thank you.
No problem....
It was good to read it again myself.
I am a English major in my 50's at Yale. I surf the posts to assist in communication so you will all learn. When you say No Problem.... it should be like NOOOOO....Problemmmmooo.. Just for better communication so we can all understand you as we cannot understand. Now let me go and help others who need my expertise. I'm off...
Shouldn't it be I am an English major, not I am a English major? Just curious...
Thanks for the article by my old friend Mike Musca. One bit was a little jarring, however:
"As an eighth grader, Pre had run 1:45 and 3:51 for the schoolboy distances of 600 yards and 1320 yards."
My math could be wrong, but aren't those both precisely the same pace? Something seems a little off there...
Probably 660 yd, if it is outdoor. 600 y is an indoor distance.
Those times for the 600 and 1320 yes appear a little off ... for
most people ... but not Pre! If you look at his times .. especially
in his first year of two ... you will see that he had exceptional
endurance. I could be wrong, but I seem to recall that in grade
9, or 10, his mile time was 5 minutes point something; while his
2 mile was 10:02 or somethink like that. Even in the year before
his graduation to Heaven Day ... today is his anniversary 33rd by
the way ... he ran a 5k in 13.22 and a 10 in 27:40. This was one
of the very few times he ran the 10 k; I believe if he'd had a couple
years at it that he would have been under 27 minutes. He was
an unusual and exceptional athlete; and in my opinion, the best
longmiddle distance runner in US history. Pre would have gone
under 13 minutes had he the chance. I argue this point by directing
your thoughts to his 3:54 mile. Also, with his 50 second 400 speed ...
his mile very well could have dropped to beneath 3:50 ... and all
his other events would have followed suit.
Pre, if he were alive today, would have rid the world of hunger, neon lights, lowered taxes, abolished combustion engines while at the same time revealing air powered travel, made Sr. Teresa weep for how little she did for the world, run 3:14 for the mile in trainer's up hill, in the snow, backwards all before lunch today.
He was good. Not the greatest. People get caught up in the nostalgia of what could have been.
