Malmo's MD record goes down

update: he's an Ethiopian exchange student, been here since October. he also said he ran a 31:30 10k.

He's a 20 year old Junior (no kidding). If you look him up on the internet he's been running races all around the world as a 20 year old, then suddenly became 18 when he enrolled at Sherwood. Bogus.

he's not 20. he'd been entering road races and putting his age down as 20 so he wouldn't have to get around having to have a parent sign the entry form. stupid, yes, but he's not 20.

That the record has even stood since 1973 is amazing in itself.

Was Malmo's time for yards? If so, it's certainly intrinsically superior, by a couple seconds...

He's not 18.

He lived in McLean, Virginia with his sister? How come he isn't going to school in Virginia then? Hmmmm Do you think that Fairfax school officials figured it out, or did they learn that 20 year olds can't enroll in high school?

i met this kid and his sister at the OBX half. really nice people. he looks really young, so i doubt he is 20. his english has gotten much better since then it seems.

In 1973 the race had to be a 2 mile. None of this 3200 meter crap back then.

The original 2 mile time was in the 9:10 range so the current time has already been converted down to the 3200.

NO one said he wasnt nice. NO one said he isn't fast. He's just old it seems. Too old to break a High School record by someone 3 years younger.

We talked to him after that race in Khon Kaen. He said he was living in Addis at the time, 10k PB of ~30 at altitude.

He seemed like he was ~18 then. Nice kid, very affable.

The largest Ethiopian community in the US is in the DC area, so it makes sense that he would be living around there somewhere.
