perhaps you have never been injured
or have never been at a high level where there is the possibility of achieving your goals
because if so, you would understand how hard it is to stop training and thus give up on a chance for the trials in your event or even another ncaa title or any other goals.
i'm wishing him the best... whether or not he "should" still be running, i wouldn't say it's stupid. it's part of the running game
