I was thumbing through my cd collection today and came across the classic soundtrack from RocknRoll High. I wonder how High School Musical came to be, and am somewhat astounded at how proficient RocknRoll High & Welcome Back Kotter actually presnent a truer high school reality as compared to High School Musical...

Why does HSM have to be "true" to reality? Does it have to be "true" like other musicals: Phantom, Grease, Hair Spray, Full Monty, etc.? Musicals are fantasy-based genre, not documentaries.

I'm not sure they do. I was contrating the two. The musicals you mention, in some ways, clearly reflect the reality of the period their cast in, however...Grease is an excellent example of the sexual subtext occuring everyday in the hallyways.
HSM, to me, mirrors a disconnect that exists in reality today whereas RNRHS, Grease, etc, are more about putting the reality in your front lap and suggesting you deal with it.

Yes, the Full Monty is a musical. Great book transposing the movie's English locale to the Rust Belt of the US. Some pretty good songs (Big Black Man, Breeze off the River, Big Ass Rock).
You missed the part where Robert Carlisle's scholng sung a ballad about the travails of living in the English post industrial landscapeIf the full monty is a musical (because of the soundtrack) than so is this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruj4gdSB9VU, which by the way is still one of the most accurate portrayals of the American high school experience (I am a high school teacher)
