Who is a better coach?
Who is a better coach?
It sort of depends. As far as recruiting goes, Lananna is way better, although that is probably the result of recruiting budget differences (If what was written in Running with the Buffaloes is still true, Wetmore doesn't have very much money to work with). As far as developing walk-ons, Wetmore is way better. Right now, I'd have to give the nod to Wetmore.
vin developed some "no names" at dartmouth in the 80s finishing 2nd in ncaa xc twice, wetmore has recruited some excellent talent.
both are good coaches. both get criticized more than they get praised. that is a shame on our appreciation of people who dedicate themselves to the sport.
I prefer Wetmore as a person. He is a guy I prefer much more. I couldn't say who is a better coach, but I like Wetmore much more!!
I agree that Lananna is a better recruiter, but he also does more for the overall track program. It's because of him that Eugene has been able to get the trials as well as the NCAA outdoor championships in a few years. He always keeps the big picture in mind. I would be willing to bet he will take over the Oregon athletic department when Pat Kilkenny leaves. I would say Wetmore might be a better coach, but Lananna is a better program CEO. He is no slouch as a coach either.
The real question is, which one of them is second to John McDonnell?:)
