Like you said, "...it was all alone in mid-April." Will he put it together when it counts? Virgin ran MUCH faster later in the season. I hope Derrick does, but only time will tell.

Get used to performances like this. 13:55 is 8:54 at the 3200 mark.

8:48 should be relatively comfortable.

Derrick reminds me of what Sage looked like when he was in high school. Both look like they're 24 years old.

He indeed was not alone. He had people he was lapping, which can give a lot of help. Catching and lapping other runners provides the opportunity for mini-goals within the race. Also, a large crowd with a intercom yelling out splits helps as well. In my mind, what else could he have asked for. But still, impressive!!

For a fair comparison, let Derrick's season play out. So far it's April 21, so give Virgin his performances to April 24. But from what he's done so far, Derrick doesn't need to worry about equaling Virgin -- he's beating him.

13:55 5,000m > converted 8:47/4:15 32/16 -- especially considering that 5,000m was run with the last 3200m in 8:49.

8:48/4:14 32/16 > converted 8:52/4:15 32/16 (this one Derrick just wins straight up.)

And did I mention last fall?

13:51.9 Detweiller 3mi > 13:50.6 Detweiller 2.97mi

By the way, I did the conversions myself before posting, and I think I even mentioned them in an earlier post, so there was no need to patronizingly do it yourself and then forget to replace "2 mile" with "3200."

This year, Derrick is better than Virgin, Fernandez is about as good as Nelson, and Fout beat them both in the biggest race of the year. Ridiculous. Derrick and Fernandez are also still eligible for World Junior races next year.

Ever notice how Derrick runs better alone than with people around him? Would he have run 13:55 in race that was not a time trial situation? Don't get me wrong, Derrick can run, but can he compete as well as he can run? He did not run great at either of the Foot Locker races, had other athletes around him.

What do you mean, either of the footlocker races? He got second at footlocker. That is pretty good. He also won NTN the week before in dominating fashion. Fout beat him fair and square, however it is a fact that Derrick was not as well rested. How can you say he didn't run well at footlocker?

Chris Derrick seems to run well in any situation. He has been the most consistent runner I have seen in Illinois in the past 15 years. Not only does he perform consistently, but he has shown consistent improvement. That is very impressive for a teenager especially one that actively posts on dyestat where they treat him like a god. He hasn't let that get to his head one little bit. That would have been impossible for me at 17.

You have issues.

There was Foot Locker regionals and Foot Locker finals, he was second at both races to Fout. I do not think Derrick ran GREAT though he did run well. I do think Derrick runs faster alone.

I'm kind of confused as to what you converted? An 8:47.4 2 Mile and 4:15.5 Mile leg converts to an 8:47/4:15 32/16?

And an 8:52.6 and 4:15.1 convert to an 8:52/4:15 32/16?

I love that people are arguing about this kid's performances and credentials.

5th (or 6th not sure exactly) fastest 5000 high school time ever. Of course, this really isn't that impressive since it was in a high school only race. And as we all know, it's better to run against slower runners than faster ones. I hear they are going to start having high schoolers rabbit Bekele's world record attempts since needing to lap people will help him.

Runs within a second of Virgin's course record time in XC. Oh, and Virgin's time was on a course .03 miles shorter. So, he was actually about 8 seconds faster.

Gets 2nd at footlocker. Wow, he really shit the bed there. I'm not sure how he can live with himself.

I take that back, i had to go back over plenty of posts to make sure I knew what was going on... would have been easier if the original person who converted them had converted the distances as well.

and I don't know if you can say Derrick wins the 2nd one straight up - I mean yes, the times were "slightly" faster, but c'mon, lets look at what Virgin was running on and what Derrick is running on. Not taking anything away from Derrick, but I don't think you can take a performance from one generation and compare it to another and say one is better than the other - you have to say they are comparable, but the ultimate decision cannot be made.
