Is the Letrun.com message board primarily a midwestern thing? It seems that no matter what Mid American Conference coach is mentioned there are dozens of posts which slam that particular coach. I see a different view. The MAC coaches are some of the best teacher/coaches in the country. They compete in a mid-major conference with little to no support, they consistently turn out national level athletes across the board, they get poor funding compared to the big-time DI programs, their facilities usually are not as good, they don't get the blue-chip athletes, yet they are able to take solid kids and make them better. When you compare the MAC to other mid-major leagues it is clearly one of the best in track & field. Why then do we bash every coach that is ever mentioned? Instead of praising these folks for working in difficult situations (anyone notice how many men's programs have been dropped?) and trying to keep track & field a viable thing, we tear them down. Every coach will have athletes who hate them, just like every coach will have athletes that will love them. That is the nature of coaching, teaching, medicine, law, etc. No one can be all things to everyone. I just think the coaches in the MAC do a great job of "coaching" in some tough situations. You have programs that have budgets which make getting to meets tough, you have programs that don't even have an indoor track, you have programs where the AD doesn't even know the coaches name.
How about we turn this message board into something positive about coaches. Boy, wouldn't that be nice.
Just a guy that loves track & field.
