in my opinion not much, Daniel Day does do an outstanding job, but despite his best efforts the movie was still long and boring. Plus i wanted to kill the director for his non stop violin use. Caused the worst headache i've had in a long time.

what else?
What are you talking about? It was a great movie. No dialogue for a while, just sweat and oil. Brilliant. And the music was great, it fit right in. None of that crap you see today. It was good, you should go see it.
great music. great acting. headache inducing violin. what specifically is so good about the story/movie?
I thought it was good. It's not an easy movie to watch though. heavy duty violence at times. But the acting by Day-Lewis was maybe the best I've ever seen. Also, the supporting acting by that preacher guy was awesome too. The music was awesome and like the previous poster stated, the opening sequence was really neat. I wouldn't say it's my favorite movie by any means, but it was very worth watching. If only for the way that you are not spoon fed hollywood style the story and the unorthodoxed manner in which he films, the non-traditional non-classical music and ...well i guess that's it. Anyways, it's good.

It sucks. DD-L is a great actor, but this is the worst perf of his film career by a huge margin.
yeah, did not really enjoy the movie. i thought ddl did an alright job, but it seemed a bit overdone trying to be oldtimey sounding. same with the preacher. i wasn't attached to any of the characters even by the end of the movie.
I really enjoyed the movie. It is sort of typical in that it is one of those bad guy rises to the top only to loose everything epics like the gangster movies (goodfellas, scarface, american gangster)only it put a different spin on it with legitimate business and takes place in a time period that hasnt been explored much by mainstream hollywood. The Tony Soprano sociopathic personality doesnt always produce drug lords, theives, and hitmen. Sometimes these people can be part of everyday life or even appear to be admirable members of society.
Yes, the point of the movie was to try and make us feel attached to psychopaths and charlatans.
It was a great movie. A realistic movie does tend to be a bit slow and even boring at times.
Hard to say if it tried to sound too old time. Nobody on here knows how it was back then.
This was probably the strangest movie that I have ever seen. I thought that DDL did a great job in his role, but there was hardly any dialogue and when there was it was uncomfortable. It was slow going and I kept waiting for something to happen. It was pretty boring looking back. Overall, it was really bizarre, especially Paul Dano's character. Most people walking out of the theater didn't like it for whatever that's worth. It's definitely NOT a great movie.
see, it is about evil oil and evil oil men.
nothing necessarily that good about it ... simply Hollywood propaganda.
we'll wast x amount of energy to show how bad oil is.
what movie is it?
Paul Thomas Anderson is my favorite director. I've seen all of his movies ("Hard Eight," "Boogie Nights," "Magnolia," Punch-Drunk Love," and "There Will be Blood"). Most critics raved about "TWBB" when it was released, calling it Anderson's masterpiece, so I was very eager to see it.
I have to admit that I was disappointed. It is, I think, a variation of "Citizen Kane," set in the oil industry rather than the publishing business, about a man who gains great wealth but loses his soul. At this point, having seen it just a few days ago, I think that I need more time to soak it in. Some great movies are like that; they don't blow you away on the initial viewing, but they linger in your mind and work their way into your consciousness. So, for me, the jury's still out. I'm just going to let it simmer in my brain for a while and see what I think of it some time down the road.
