I'm a 21-year-old who has been out of real training since high school. In high school, I ran a 4:32 mile as a junior, though I had a few problems throughout the seasons and never had a big PR; senior year was a bust. I never felt like I really reached my potential. One of my few good races in high school was over a summer before junior year, where I spontaneously ran a 1:21 half marathon off of some base training.
Now I'm starting to get back in the routine and for the last 3-4 weeks I've been slowly upping mileage, being consistent, and looking toward the spring. There's a popular half marathon in my area at the end of march that has good competition and would be fun. I am considering putting in considerable training and gear up for a half-marathon 'peak' so to speak. But I also would like to try the track again, from the 1500 to the 5k, and although I don't compete for my collegiate team I could find a few different meets in my area at the right time with the right competition. Before I start specializing any training I'd like to hear what others may suggest.
I could train for a half and begin the distance step-up that comes with being older, or try once more to bring down the track pr's. I think I'm leaning toward track, although it would be much easier and convenient (maybe a bit more fun) to train for the half. My mind isn't made up, what do you guys think. I'll try to answer any more questions if there are any.
