As a general rule I recommend avoiding any eBay seller who asks for payment by money order. (Money order! Do you even know where to get a money order?) I can understand some folks not wanting to use PayPal, but if they don't accept personal checks either, they are probably crooks.
Your statement that "they" are probably crooks is based on ignorance.
Yes, paypal is owned by ebay and is a conflict of interest in that they can control complaints by yanking money out of sellers account with no recourse. My brother is part of a class action suit against ebay because of this. (He has been selling over 10 years with thousands of positive feedback of 99.7%)
While he accepts personal checks, he has to wait for them to clear before sending out merchandise. He does not need to wait when he gets a money order. (You can purchase money orders numerous places in every town in america.) Recently, there has been some fraud with money orders, so these aren't even 100% safe.
If you want one key to a good seller, simply look at the length of time they have been selling. Anyone trying to scam people will not be able to last very long with the recourse buyers have to out them.
