I recently bought a new pair of running shoes. They obviously didn't fit very well and I now have a large swelling over my big toe. I'm fairly certain its a bunion. I have changed shoes, cut the sides out of the shoes that I run in, Iced, taken Ibuprofen etc. But it seems to be getting worse. I can still run in the shoes with holes cut in the sides without much pain but the swelling persists and is very tender to touch. I've taken days off without any improvement. Its gotten so bad that I can't fit in my work shoes anymore. Anyone ever had a similar problem and if so what can you do about it.
Any ever had a bunion?

Well - I have bunions. From your description, I would say there is a good chance you have one. Have you lost any range of motion with that joint? Go to a good foot doctor for a diagnosis. You will most likely need to wear some sort of orthotic and be mindful of the shoes you wear. You don't say if you are a woman (who are more likely to get bunions). I cut out wearing any sort of heels long ago, and mine are doing O.K. Wearing good shoes (all shoes, not just running), soaking them from time to time in warm water and vinegar (yes, vinegar - stinks, but works), massages and wearing toe separators between your second and big toes certainly help. Recommended shoes are those with large toe boxes. For running, look for those with only mesh where the big toe joint lies in the shoe. Any sort of leather or emblem in that area can really irritate the joint. I wear Asics b/c they always seem to have toe boxes large enough to accomodate my big toe joint.
Most likely mine will require surgery to correct, but I have put that off, as I have been able to run with them fine so far. I've always heard from those who have had bunion surgery that your foot is never the same. One of my doctors told me that the patient will tell the doctor when they need the surgery, and that's when the patient just can't manage the pain.
Good luck. Read this for a description of a bunion -

Thanks - that helps. I'm a male but I'm almost certain of the diagnosis. I just checked and all the shoes I'm running in have leather strips near the joint. I've cut portions of the side out but the leather supports the shoe so I had left that portion in place. Perhaps that explains why it continues to get more inflamed. I already wear orthotics and I've tried toe seperators. I'll try the vinegar. Any other suggestions?

I've have bunions from training and racing in flats that were glove tight. Now that I'm old and slow, I've increased the size I wear 1/2 to a full size larger. No pain since.

Definitely look for shoes that don't have some sort of strap right at that area. The first that comes to mind is the Speedstar, but those are for races and shorter runs. I think the Asics Cumulus also have that wide mesh area. Look at some Mizuno models, too. However, for my money, Asics have always had the neccesary room in the toe box. Be careful, though. Sometime the more mesh, the more flimsy the shoe. Don't get the Asics Stratus (I believe that was the name). They broke down really fast. Only Asics shoe I never liked.
To give you a good outlook, I went to three different doctors when I was 26 for my bunions. One said have surgery; two said change your shoes, wear orthotics, soak your feet. I chose the more conservative approach. I am now 41, and run as well as I ever did (I remember back when I was 26 one doctor said I had the feet of a 70 year old woman - I wonder how old my feet would be now?). Bunions are the least of my problems right now, injury wise. The key is to find the right shoe for running AND for everday wear. For the latter, I go for the Clarks, etc. type shoes. I don't look near as fancy as other gals, but my feet feel good. Take care of them 24/7. Invest in either a foot bath (pour in some of the vinegar) and/or a foot warmer. You can also buy bunion pads for comfort. Freeze a coke bottle full of water, and roll it under your foot pad directly below that bunion. I would go see a doctor though, for taylor made inserts.
One other bit of advice from me (just personal experience, nothing I got from a doctor)... I never go barefoot, even in the house. I always have some sort of shoe on my foot. Nothing makes my bunions sore like walking barefoot. I know some people claims they cause PF, but I do like Crocs for everyday wear. Lots of room, and a nice soft landing.
Hope this helps. -

YES! I, too, have gone a half size bigger in the shoes I wear. And further to that, if you find your heel slipping b/c the shoe is a bit bigger, use the extra lacing holes at the top of the shoe (make the loop with the first and third holes at the top, then pull the opposite lace under and through the loop - I hope that makes sense). Also, to make more room in the toe box, skip the first one or two holes from the toe when you lace the shoe (again, I hope that makes sense). -
And I ended up having to get surgery. Take care of it best you can. Don't push it too much.. trust me.

I experience foot pain pretty constantly and have struggled to find shoes that would help me alleviate the pain. Well, i have to say that I have found them. They fit well. They have reduced my heel pain as well as my fasciitis symptoms. I can walk much easier and longer now . So happy I got these shoes! orthofeet do the job!

They sure did back in the day:

I used to get those all the time at the Outback Steak House. Incredibly good but probably not good for you.

Do bunions just pop up like that? Bunions are bone growths so I don't see how one would have developed after wearing ill fitting shoes a couple times. Either way, I have a bunion on one foot. Try the New Balance 600 shoes. Saucony's Triumph model used to be golden but I haven't had any luck with the ISO models.
