All I want to do is to run at the elite level. It's the only thing I can see myself doing 5, 10 years from now. But I'm not some ex-college stud looking to get back into training, or any kind of prodigy. I'm a kid in high school.
Some specifics about myself--
I'm in my junior year of high school.
I've run for a while: I started cross country in seventh grade, then began running year-round in ninth grade.
I had never run more than about 40 miles/week until this past spring, when I averaged 50-55 mpw during track season. Over the summer, I started around 45-50mpw and worked my way up until I was running 70 miles a week or more for all of August. During cross country this fall, my training was mostly longer intervals (1000's, miles, etc., around race pace) and mileage was 60-65 miles a week. The harder work paid off, and I ran well at my state meet and NTN Regionals and Nationals (I was in the top 3 in my region and top ten at nationals)
My track times suck. I ran 4:36 for the mile and 9:54 for two miles last spring. I've improved a LOT since then. I split 9:55-7 for two miles at several cross country races this season.
This winter, I'm planning to get up to 80miles/week for a while before getting into fast stuff. I think I can run around 9:15 for two miles.
Anyways. What I care about, far more than this year's track times or any of that, is the long term. As you can see, I'm pretty decent, but by no means exceptional. I want to change that. Running fast high school times is all fine and good, but I want to compete on a much higher level when I'm older.
Honestly, I have no idea if I have the talent. It may well be that I'll never amount to much. But, I'd like to pose this question to those of you who've competed at the national, international levels, or coaches, anyone who knows their stuff.
What advice would you give to a kid like me? I can and will devote myself to this. I'll go out and run 120-mile weeks, train twice a day, absolutely anything. What does one do to prepare for 5, 10 years down the road, to really become fast, to get to the next level?
Thank You,
