I'm gonna think out loud here.
Can anyone shed light on why the OT in NYC cost $1.2 million? The budget may already be out there, but did it really cost that much to close down the park, hire rangers/cops, host athletes, etc...? I find this to be an extraordinary expense, and perhaps even an extravagance.
This is a stretch, but what if every "track and field" qualifying competition cost that much? Or any olympic sport for that matter???
Don't get me wrong - I love the sport, I love the excitement of a qualifying race, and I love the raw challenge of trying to get a goal time and be part of "the few". But I'm also a realist. Athletes and actors make way too much for doing what they do. Corporate CEO's get unnecessary buy-outs in the millions of dollars, and insurance companies rape us like crazy. The fact that millions and millions will be wasted away in the upcoming presidential election campaigns makes me sick to my stomach. I hate excess, as I would guess most runners do. I believe there should be a qualifying race that promotes the sport, but even at the risk of non-existent national exposure, we should be fiscally responsible.
$1.2 million just to determine which three go to the Olympics is ridiculous.
