It's pretty hard to believe that Kenya has never won gold in an Olympic Marathon. That said, their chances in Beijing are unbelievable. A whopping 45 different Kenyans ran sub-2:10 marathons in 2007 alone, 15 of which were sub-2:08. Choosing who to go to Beijing is not going to be an easy task...
You've got the big names: Lel, Tergat, Limo, Cheruiyot, but there are tons of other guys who have run much faster times this year (granted, on fast courses). Emmanuel Mutai and Richard Limo, for instance, ran 2:06:29 and 2:06:45 respectively in Amsterdam, and Abel Kirui, who was second to Haile at Berlin in 2:06:51.
Sammy Wanjiru, who holds the WR in the half, just ran an incredible 2:06:39 debut in Fukoka at only 21 years old!
Don't forget about Like Kibet, the World Champion, or Patrick Ivuti, who defeated a stellar field in Chicago, including Cheruiyot.
The abundance of young talent is just mind-boggling, and it's only getting better.
Who do you think Athletics Kenya should choose for Beijing?
