"The government always thinks they know what's good for us"
What is even funnier is when regular people think they know everything. This sort of populist resentment politics that is hyper sensitive to anyone possibly thinking they know more than you is what we have so many people in this country who believe in gods, heaven and creationism and just think scientists are just people who know better than anyone else.
Of course, it is one thing to think that for the sake of the 1% that aren't idiots that we shouldn't have government telling people what to do, but it is quite another to think "the people" have a better track record of good sense than experts.
We force people to get car insurance, don't we? Everybody thinks they are a better than average driver, but would you really want a world where we weren't forced to carry liability insurance?
This anti-elitism of modern conservatism is very tiring. What happened to good old Mencken conservatives who reckoned everyone an idiot and it was the idiot socialists and hippes who believed in radical personal freedom. it seems conservatives have just jumped on the "resent your betters" bandwagon, merely leaving economics and money out of the equation of what constitutes an elite.
My God, if I had to choose between being governed by educated and cynical folks that, once democratically elected (and able to be democratically deposed), have a pretty strong hand to make laws verses the whims of the ignorant rabble, I'll take the "elites" any day.
