His sister runs with me at my highschool and she told me that he got married and is going to med school. He doesn't want to run anymore.

he went to med or dental school and stopped running. I think he had a stress fracture also.

Gee, what a shock.
A mormon getting married young and forgetting about athletics.
Don't mean this in a mean way, but its unfortunate how these people waste their ability. Makes me think of that Korean in that Christian cult a few years back who didn't even go to college because he had to go get married and be a missionary.
By Jess not running he is not "wasting his ability."
When it comes down to it, being a successful runner doesn't amount to a hill of beans. The opportunities to serve others as a doctor, and even as a husband, are more plentiful than spending so much time running.
You honor God when running by taking care of your body and using your talent, but that's about it. Serving others, which as I understand it is what Mormons try to do--by living a Christ-like life, is a very devout and holy path to attempt to take.
You could even look at it this way: By giving up something you enjoy (running) for something higher (service to others)--that is a tremendous, selfless sacrifice. Faith without works is dead (Bible, page 257).
So for Jess, this is what Living Faith really is.

Oh, so that's what page it's on. Thanks for the info.
Yes, it's an old joke, and I've gotten a lot of mileage from it!
He ran at pre-nats, and was leading through the 1k... did he get hurt after then?
was that Korean kid you mention named young song Leal or something, cause i remember that name from back in the day.
yong sung leal or something close. he was legit as all hell. annnnnd a Moonie who got married from the interweb.
This guy apparently entered college in the fall of 2000? If so that would make him 24/25 for last years race and 25/26 for this years race(though he is evidently done, he could have apparently competed this year?). Absolutely ridiculous, even with the mission included in there. I respect his accomplishments and 3rd at NCAA is amazing at any age, but its a little ridiculous for a 25-26 year old man to be competing with mainly 18-22 year olds.

Mormonism, including the mormon mission, has nothing to do with serving others. Just wanted to clear that up, but yah i agree overall he isn't "wasting" much of anything by quiting running. It is a waste to run when you don't want to be.

Are you serious? Mormonism, including the mission has nothing to do with serving others? What does it include? Actually don't answer that...I don't want thousands of people to listen to an uneducated and ignorant person.
I usually don't listen or respond to those type of comments but that is just ridiculous.

It's really not a hard argument to make. As far as I can tell, these missions involve proselytizing more than anything; in other words (if you take even a mildly cynical view of religion) missions focus on creating more Mormons, while maybe also reaffirming the missionary's own faith.
Of course, if you don't have any cynicism in you, you are free to believe that missions really do serve others by helping the misguided see that they'd be happier if they changed religions.
He has not raced at all this season. The announcer at Pre-Nats was mistaking new SUU lead runner Mark Currel, for Jess. And if you will watch the video (courtesy of flotrackr.com) you will see that there is no resemblance between the two whatsoever.

I am a member of the LDS church; (commonly known as the mormon church). Having experience working with the missionary's, I know that they serve others more than people would think. The missionary's are the first ones to be called whenever someone needs help moving, or an elderly woman needs some work done in her yard.
I know that it may seem like our only object in mind is to bring more people into our church; and of course we try and share our beliefs because we know that it can create more happiness in peoples lives. But we also believe that through serving others, we are serving God and we try to serve as much as we can.

Maybe he had to stop because they found out he was too old and ineligible to compete anymore.
that interview makes it seem as though he was an insane talent. Absolutely incredible. He probably should have drank a lot more milk though. It also makes it seem as though he wasn't that "in" to running, i.e. not knowing about the different championships, the significance of 3rd at NCAA's...
Heck of a talent, still can't get over it. I wish him best of luck at med school or whatever he may be doing.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
