Can someone with NCAA knowledge explain the medical redshirt, not in terms of how many races you can run before injury to attain a M.R. but instead in terms of not racing for two straight seasons due to injury? I have heard that if you redshirt one year and then get hurt the next, you can't use the medical redshirt, but if you got two stress fractures just before the 2006 xc season and missed it in recovery and took the redshirt and then had another major overuse injury (surgery to repair) before the 2007 xc season, can you get the medical for the 2007 season. From what I understand, if you have 2 straight years of credible and extenuating injuries that prevent any competition, then you can use a redshirt and then garner the medical redshirt as well since you were hurt two years in a row instead of simply redshirting the first time for a different reason. I know this doesn't involve someone who has been racing and get hurts, but how would this play out for someone in D-1? Does the 5 year rule always apply, because I know of a few who have got 6th years and is this a case where a possible 6th year could be earned due to 18 straight months of injury? Thanks for any and all input!
