I want to watch the trials, but I have no place to stay and don't want to spend $200 on a hotel room. Anybody else in this situation and where do you plan on staying? Will I get arrested for sleeping in my car?

a/s/l?
do you know anyone that lives in NYC or LI?
I am a male in my mid 20s and I reside in PA.
You don't live that far away. Why not leave early enough the night before to arrive in New York by 6:00 AM. Park your car on the street in Manhattan (or spring for a lot), eat some breakfast, and get into Central Park by 7:20 AM. Drive home after the race is over. Problem solved.
Stay in New Jersey. Hotels by Continental Airlines Arena run around $100 or less. Other than that I'm not sure of any hotels in NYC that weekend that are under $150. Check hotels.com.

New York City International Hostel.
just stay at a cheap dumpy hotel, just don't take anything to valuable.
Look into the Holiday Inn or Embassy Suites in Secaucus, NJ... Only a couple miles from the Lincoln Tunnel, so you can drive into Manhattan in no time Saturday morning.
Crowne Plaza Hotel in Times Square or the Waldorf are both good options
Try the Leo House. I found a room for $80. I have to take the sub/bus but it beats the $200 to $300 rate they are gouging all NYC marathoners.
