Sorry, to rock the boat, but Cierpinski was never found to have used prohibited products, and yes - Shorter dug up a document which linked all East German sportsmen to various products, but Cierpinski has vehemently denied ever taking anything illegal, and unless we can formally prove the contrary, we have no choice but to accept that he won the race fair and square. Just because many East Germans were suspected of taking enhancing athletic products, does not automatically mean that Cierpinski was one of them.
Cierpinski, in a recent interview, said that he has never taken drugs, and that he did it all through natural training and progression over the years when he moved from the steeple (8:30) to the marathon, via the 10.000 (28:20).
Look at the way Cierpinski was built (somewhat similar build to Lopes - short and powerful), and what he did in training, and there is no reason to doubt that he did it legally. He also improved gradually over the years, and now (as a 60 year old) is still in very good health - and that would be difficult, had he taken a lot of products over the years. Now he still runs, owns a running store, and coaches some runners. He is very well respected in the part of Germany which was formerly East Germany. His son (age 22) is becoming a very good triathlete, and good runner as well, running 2:21 marathon in Frankfurt last spring, under the watchful eye of Dad 'Waldie" on his bike.
