Damn! 94 was the first WR. 13 years. Bash me now. I deserve it.

this is an excellent question and this thread deserves more attention. bump.
I leafed through some of the info here:
http://www.athletix.org/statistics/stats.html
It looks like Hannes Kohelmainen set records in 1912 (5000) and 1920 (marathon). Bubka set records starting in 1984 through to 1994. Grete Waitz set a world record in 1975 (3000) and 1983 (marathon). None seem to top Geb, though. Others may have a deeper look.
This just in: Irena Szewinska set records in 1965 (100) and 1976 (400).
Thanks for the research.
Also interesting is Ulrike Meyfarth. As a 16 year old in the 72 Olympics, she won gold at a WR tying height. Then in 1983, she and Tamara Bykova set a new WR. I'm not sure who cleared it first, but Bykova finished second in the competition.

Haile Gebrselassie is unique in the history of athletics. Marathon WR almost 13 1/2 years after first 5000m WR. And he has had an absolute highlight (world record, global (junior) title) in almost every year since 1992!
Paavo Nurmi set his first 10000m WR in 1921 and his last record over 2 Miles in 1931. To answer the question: No (at least not in the usual events).
Mary Decker - first world record 1973, last in 1985. I think I have that right.
The thread title should have been "...Any Other Runner..." of course.
yes. How could you all forget the great Fanny? Fanny Blankers-Koen set 7 individual and 2 relay WR's between 1938 and 1951: 100yds, 100m, 220yds, 80m hurdles, high jump, long jump and pentathlon.

Wow. I didn't realize she was setting WRs that early.
I actually thought about Fanny, but didn't look hard enough for info on her. I didn't find any of her 1930s records.
wondering
Probably Yannis Kouros(sp?) has.
Geb is remarkable but he was one of the first wave of guys to run so much faster over the 5 and 10km which gave him a substantial cushion to slow down a bit and still be breaking records.
I still think Lopes is more remarkable for longevity and more definite continued improvement. He had to be getting faster at every distance.
You might argue that Geb had the potential to run faster for the marathon when he was at his absolute peak on the track.
