Just got back from UC Riverside. I ran 53 sec PR. How short was that course? Does anyone one?

I just got back from Riverside as well. The course is not short, just fast and there was a lot of good competition there.
the course was actually 30 meters long...what was your time 28:something...in that case it would be easier to improve alot.

My GPS had it way short. I just wanted to see what others had to say.
Please tell me who the good competition was?

All the people who beat you.

Coach Ray was smoking something CRAZY when we measured that course.
The course is legit. I saw Irv Ray and one of his assistants measuring the course earlier this week with a wheel. Unless they purposefully made the course short, it should be a full 8k.

Every year Coach Ray will purposely change the course for 2 reasons. 1st is so you can’t compare the times to last years times. 2nd because he wants his team to run fast times for a regional ranking.
It's really not big deal since XC has nothing to do with time. However the course was short!

unless they purposefully made the course short?
You said it;)
well, i just did a google earth measurement and it looks right. your gps was likely off to losing it's signal in the trees and then measuring the shortest route when it picked the signal back up.
why does everyone think that their gps unit is never wrong?
oh yeah, i ran 27:30. not too bad for the little i have been doing this summer.

So you did a measurement on google earth? Well if you know anything at all, when one uses "google earth" it's imposable to measure turns and curves accurately. That would just be an estimated distance.
Sorry to break the news your 25:30 is really a 26:10.
And anyone who knows anything about geometry knows that a chord is shorter than a curve. Google Earth is going to be a tiny bit short, not long.

And anyone who knows anything about XC knows that time is irrelevant.
Don't hate me for exposing the obvious!!!!!!!!!
But on the other hand it was short.
I didn't say that time mattered. I was just defending the guy who used Google Earth. I don't have a clue how long the course is because I've never run there.
Of course it was short.....

40-45 sec short.
The only way Irv Ray's guys run fast these days is on short courses.
He knows it.
They know it.
You and I know it.
He should write a book about it called "Can't Figure Out How To Coach? Shorten The Course For Success!"
first off, if i measured it on Google earth it will be short not long.
second, i use google earth all the time to measure course before i will them and it is damn close when i check it with a wheel.
third, most people i talked with ran about what you would expect for a 8k based on their recent times.
fourth, you can not read as i said i ran 27:30 not 25:30 so that means i ran a 28:15 thank you very much according to you.
so put that in your pipe and smoke it.
