If they're respected, then why the predictions that his records are going down every year? There are ways to disrespect besides direct bashing. If the guys being primed for the record were Lagat and Webb only, along with Teg very recently, then fine. But otherwise, we're talking about guys who BK could've jogged next to while they were setting PR's. BK would've jumped off a balcony if he ran 13:10 in a fast race, yet those are Goucher's 2 lifetime races. Webb's recent 5K's were his 13:10 and a DNF. A few months ago, he ran an 8:23 2-mile which is slower than BK's 5K pace.
I'm assuming you don't remember when Kennedy was beaten by Goucher? Actually, Goucher may be running just as well at his age as Kennedy was at 32.
Kennedy would not have been jogging next to Rupp in the 10K at Cardinal invite, he MIGHT have beat Rupp, but he would not have been jogging next to him.
Obviously Bob deserves a lot of respect for his PR's, records, and being the American pioneer of confidence that caucasions could compete with the african dominance. Bob was training with some of the worlds best (Noah Ngeny and 7:20 3K Daniel Komen)in his prime.
Having said that, I certainly don't expect our current runners to idolize that or we will have no chance of advancing past it. Outside of Lagat, Tegencamp has a real shot at his 5K, possibly his 3K too. Dan Linoln, Solinsky and Rupp all better want that 5K record as well. Rupp will almost certainly get the US 10K record in the future, and may not do enough speed work to have a shot at Bob's 5K.
Is it not reasonable for a guy who owns most of the junior national records and a collegiate 10K record at 21 years old is not going to have a shot at the other records in the future?
I think you are confusing disrespect with logic. The runners respect Bob, the fans respect Bob, and the runners and the fans would like to see those records taken down. Progress.
