Is it really true when they call Tyson Gay the fastest man in the world? Couldn\'t there be some African in the bush or some guy doing his own training not to compete who is faster?

There could be, but the guy in the bush is not laying it on the line week after week like Tyson is. You've got to be in the game for it to count. I ran a 10000 last night in 26:14, but it was hand-timed, and I had no witnesses, so it doesn't count for anything more than a good training run.
exactly. sure, there could be some "bushmen" out there in the jungles running like gazelles, but that's just speculation. Calling Tyson Gay the fastest man in the world is probably a safe assumption.

really? I think you're lying
do you think there's a miler out there somewhere who can run 3:42? it's no more likely. people don't run 10.00 on no training. and they sure as hell don't run 9.76 without knowing how to sprint correctly.
Very safe to say that Gay is the fastest human around. Study after study of "naturally gifted" sprinters from around the world have been conducted. They rarely find anyone who can run under 10.3 without specific athletic training. Never been a 10.0 without specific training.

There is definitely somewhere in the world, someone that is CAPABLE of being the fastest in the world at a certain distance.
Think about how much 6 billion is; there's that many people.

The same thing goes for running.

Obviously.
That theoretical fast guy in the Bush probably isn't expereicned at starting out of the blocks and probably doesn't dip as well at the finish. Tyson Gay would beat him.
I would give the title to Powell, he has the faster time even if he lost head to head to Gay.
But Tyson's time was faster with the wind conversion - he 'beat' Powell's WR with a just over legal wind +2.2 at Reebok, and he has since run faster comaprable times into headwinds.
Powell's not going to beat Gay again anytime soon
Powell WAS the fastest man in the world. Just because he has a wr doesn\'t mean he can run that fast now.
Running the faster time does not mean you are faster than someone. Beating someone head to head, under nearly identical circumstances does. When they race each other in the same race they have the same track, weather, wind, etc. One guy running faster than the other in a different race leaves too much speculation. Would the other guy have run even faster in that race? Still - a world record does mean you ran faster than anyone ever has. We just don't know that someone else might not have run even faster. This is even more of a possibility if there is a certain someone who has shown the ability to beat you when racing head to head.

“Records don’t mean much. Racing is about people and not clocks.”
Steve Ovett
He's probably the fastest gay guy since Carl Lewis.

Gould was notorious for ignoring scientific fact in his never ending quest to prove that everyone is equal. We aren't. While there is a bit of truth in the statement of his you posted - the truth is not at all in what Gould intended to convey in his disingenuous books and statements. Please post quotes from true scientists and researchers, not from self deceptive snakes with a ruinous agenda for all free societies.

Tyson has a son--and not adopted--so draw your own conclusions. However, you can say:
The fastest man in the world is Gay.
I'd say Tyson Gay can lay claim to the "fastest man in the World" more validly than the Super Bowl Champs can call themselves "World Champs"..or World Series winners "World Champs" or NBA winners "World Champs"
