I am pretty sure you know how lights work. When it changes from "walk" to "don't walk" the light doesn't change instantly. the same traffic will still be going and allow for you to finish crossing.The light was probably yellow and she assumed that the guy was going to stop. It doesn't take away from the tradegy and I am sure the guy feels horrible as it is even if the blame is not his.

For example, I was stopped at a major intersection this morning and proceeded to run across when the "Walk" sign came on. I wasn't even halfway across the road (while running!) when the sign changed to "Don't Walk"! If a car struck me (green or yellow light), would I be to blame for crossing at a "Don't Walk" sign? Geez, I don't know how people even get across roads while just walking!
