What are the 10 worst hit singles of the 1970s?

Actually the America version of this song isn't all that bad.

"Loving You" by Minnie Riperton. The song has birds chirping in the background. I wanted to take a gun and shoot the radio when it came on.

On the average 70s music was much better than what we get today.

But, I gotta throw a bone to Crocodile Rock. It was THE hit of my eighth grade year. It might be stupid, but at least it rocks.

Honorable mention goes to some gimmicky hits that just missed the 70s: Love Stinks, Freezeframe and Centerfold by J. Geils Band. To have to live through an era when one of those audio atrocities could suddenly emanate from any random sound system was to live in constant fear. That effing whistle from Centerfold still plagues my dreams.

"Love is Like Oxygen" was a great song.

"Forever in Blue Jeans" belongs on the all time worst, for sure.

Kung Fu Fighting .... gad, just awful.

I HATE "American Pie". That song is one of the most over played over hyped pieces of crap I've been unfortunate enough to listen to. I hate the pretensiousness of it, and the Baby Boomer stink that clouds the entire song.

Some mentioned before but these all made number 1 on the charts to aid insult to injury.

I belive Tammy was the first really really bad song to top the charts in the '50s

the '60s gave us Paul and Paula- Hey Paula and Honey by Goldsboro

In the '70s we heard much too much of

Carpenters- Top of the World

Grand Funk really trashed this kinda cover of the Little Eva hit- Do The Locomotion

Rick Dees and his aptly named cast of Idiots- Disco Duck

Song Sung Blue by Neil Diamond

Disco Lady - Johnny Taylor

Donna Sommers MacArthur Park took an incredibly bad song and made it even worse

Speaking of Ms Sommers, she teamed up with Babs Streisand to do a disco song in the 70s or early '80s titled with a baby shampoo slogan that did not make #1 but is worth the mention just because it's even worse than you would imagine a Streisand disco song could be.

it is in the US, but worldwide it lags well behind Jacksons Thriller.

American Pie is amazing. Who cares if it's overplayed, it's still a magnificent song. It captures the times with very metaphoric and sympbolic lyrics. Maybe you just thought it sucked because it referenced a nursory rhyme with "Jack be nimble, Jack be quick."Such a beautiful song.

I've only heard this song live in a blues bar, and I thought it was pretty dam good.

I agree it is a fantastic song and he also wrote another classic in Vincent. Lyrically it's probably the most discussed song in pop music.

Malmo, you're right. My list is pretty lame. But at least I managed to kick start a conversation.

FWIW, your list is worse than mine (but in a good way). What I means by that is I would substitute some of my 10 worst for some of yours, like Mandy, Tie a Yellow, Muskrat, and Billy don't be...

I agree that "Sunshine on my Shoulder" deserves to be listed as one of the 10 worst. I would delete "Nights in White Satin" from my list to make way for John Denver.

And what about "World Turning" by Fleetwood Mac? It ontains some of the most hackneyed rock lyrics of all time:
