Great Big Sea doesn't play Irish music- they play music native to Newfoundland, based on folk songs from there. What may sound Irish to you is five hundred years of East Coast tradition.

Bono is from Ireland, as are all the members of U2. Dropkick Murphys is a Boston band that plays Irish punk.
A thousand pardons. When I hear a song like "The Night Pat Murphy Died" it sounds Celtic to me. And then you have the band members themselves describing their own music as having Celtic influence.
Nonetheless, thanks for the education.
Undertones
(Ok, they are from Londonderry, Northern Ireland, UK; but I'll consider the question to refer to the Island of Ireland, not the Republic)
U2 not Irish? Are you kidding? Besides all of the members of the band originating from the good country, have you listened to any of their songs or lyrics? My God....

Couldn't agree more! I've seen them perform live 11 times! #12 is coming up in a few weeks in LA.
Black 47, the Pogues, Hothouse Flowers
Don't know if these guys are still around, but one of the greatest live bands of all times: the Drovers
I would throw the Cranberries into the mix, saw them live, it was a good concert.
How is "best" being defined?
If best = album sales, #1 hits, top grossing concerts, longevity as megastars, then U2 by far.
I'm a huge U2 fan so I can't be convinced that there is a better irish band out there even ignoring the above criteria.
