Man, you all are really beginning to piss me off. A runner has a bad race and suddenly instead of being better than Kennedy they are a crappy inconsistant american. Dang people, its called a bad race. Have faith in our best runners and don't be so frickin fair weather.

Being in Lausane and experiencing the weather, I must say it wasn't bad at all for endurance events. It sucked for explosive events (sprints and jumps, as well as throws), but 14 degrees C is PERFECT weather for endurance events. The rain was light and inconsistent, the wind was either non present (0.0m/s or up to 1.2m/s most of the time) or very light. No gusts, no floods of water, hail... none of it. Had the athletes have 15 degrees warmer, it would be hot as hell for Lausane and very unusual. It was still at 700m altitude, but the effect is very mild- I would say 3-6s/5k for an altitude unconditioned athlete. The guys coming into this race knew about the slight altitude, so there's no excuse about it.

Otherwise, the race was simply slow with inconsistent pacing and little too late at night.

funny, it seems to me that Teg ran pretty well last year (in europe) when it counted.

I agree with malmo this was hardly an ideal race for Teg to attempt sub 13 and I wouldnt read anything into this race other than it was a good workout for him.

His decision to run in Lausanne seemed a bit stange to me at best you get good weather but you cant eliminate the altitude factor.

I think at the moment the only non africans who are likely to go sub 13 in the near future are Cragg and Teg. Both have set significant 1500m Prs this year and both are in good shape.

I was really impressed by Cragg in Paris. The pacemakers made a mess of the first 1km (2:37). Last 2km was covered in 5:03 which considering a decent wind was blowing during the 3k 5:03 was pretty decent.

Looking forward to both these guys going sub 13 in the near future.

Too bad your "facts" don't jibe with reality. It was 10C (50F) at 9:00 Pm with a steady 9.8 mph wind from the SW. 50'F is only good for marathoning. It's way too cold for 5000m running.

The average high on July 10 is 76 degrees.

i don't think it was a horrible race for these guys, just an ice breaker BUT-is 50 to 60 degree F really that horrible conditions to race in for a 5000m? come on - if it was 70F we would all be saying it was too hot to PR-altitude? i think we need to look up some info on the effects of various altitudes. the track at lausanne sits at 2000ft - that is hardly severe altitude

I was in the stands shivering. It was really really cold, rainy, and abit windy in lausanne last night. No one performed up to their full potential, but nonetheless went out and competed well despite the poor conditions.

Teg and Ritz were back at first, but really surged forward towards the end. I think that laps 4-8, at least 5 guys dropped out.

asafa powell ran last night, just in the relay for jamaica. jamaica was trailing great britain but powell managed to catch them just before the line. tyson gay was also pretty dominant in the mens 200m. In the 800m robinson went out hard and got caught, borsakovsky snagged 2/3rd ?

liu xiang was probably the biggest attraction there, the crowd loved him. he did win, and there were a number of chinese fans there to see him race.

Typical of Letsrun, when the obvious is stated that the conditions in Lausanne are "not ideal" and at "2200' altitude" someone translates it to meaning "horrible conditions" and "severe altitude." It's been stated many times here Lausanne is not ideal for fast times. Not one person (except you) has suggested that the conditions were horrible.

70F is ideal for PRs in a 5000 most would agree.

700 meters altitude is in fact a factor. Does not seem like alot but remember back in 2001 when the WC was held in Edmonton (similar alt.) I was in top shape at that time, just off 13.09 and I could still really feel it. Still made the finals but a runner like Mark Caroll got into big trouble,"could not breath" so did most other mzungos and few made the finals.

Just wonder why not run in Rome instead which is Friday. In those big meets you get your assed kicked but you can hang on, pace is even, always great weather, no altitude, fast track. See A.Cragg in the startlist there Friday by the way

I watched Tirunesh Dibaba run 30,15 in Sollentuna 2 years ago with exactly the same weather. Didn´t seem to bother her too much. Did someone say the word "balls"?

Teg is more consistent than Mottram, if I recall right this was Teg's first 'bad' race in 2 years time. And it was clearly that he suffered in the cold running with gloves on.

Yea why don't we just ignore Marius and Malmo who are/were both top level elite athletes who have raced in all sorts of conditions and insteaad let's listen to ourselves and a few others (who are probably 18 min 5kers) on what the effects of weather are on these athletes. It is impossible to say what the perfect temperature is but look at the numbers malmo pulled out, look at how far off their pr's some of these runners were. Ritz had one of the best days out of the bunch. Sure 50 degrees might feel great for some of you but then again how many of you are elites? Exactly, why don't we listen to the ones that have been there and done that?

Very interesting about the wind conditions. It looks like I was in different city then. Most of the performances (200m, 100m and jumps incl.) had regular winds- under 2.0m/s. Where did you get 10C? At 7 when I was leaving my flat, it was 14C... probably your weather channel from different hemisphere.

Even 50F is just fine for 5k, as Malmo's statistics suggests (did Haile or Bekele "shivered" at their record runs?). 700m altitude may have had some influence, but not weather.
