Currently, in North America the fertility rate is approximately 1.5 children per woman. In order to simply keep up with the death rate, we need a fertility rate of 2.3 children per woman. The only reason the US and Canada and most industrialized countries are still growing is because of open door policies on Immigration (less in the US more in Canada. If we relied solely on our own citizens, our population would shrink.
According to CNN Money, the number one issue facing Business owners are labor shortages and high turnover. Studies have shown that our fertility rates have fallen down to 1.5 are in part due to our Materialistic society and poor social/welfare programs for support. The only Industrialez country that has turned this trend around is France, who has extremely generous incentives for Families to produce offspring.
The free-market has failed, where forms of socialism have helped. The re-distribution of taxes to help families is necesary for all to, even those without children, to contiue to enjoy their high levels of living - other wise the economies of these countries will suffer due to lack of trained labour. Its everyones problem.
Hope this sheds some light on the issue.
