Roads. If you want trails, you are going to have to drive out of town. I've lived here for a while if you maybe want some routes.
yeah routes would be great, thanks
Friend, you are moving to the nirvana of old school, no frills distance racing!
The Westport Summer Series enters its 45th year this July, and things are mostly unchanged since its inception (and that's a good thing). No pre-reg, low entry fees, you get a tongue depressor at the finish (some of them may be from the original races), all odd distances except the culminating 10 miler - you're in for a shock that is also a treat.
As for places to run, park at Longshore golf course and pick up one of the Summer Series courses (the maps are all posted online. There's also a group that meets at the Wakeman Boys & Girls club every weekend for long runs.
If you want trails, head to Waveny Park in New Canaan (several miles of bridle paths, XC races every Tue. night in the summer) or north to Devi's Den in Weston (much larger, lots of hilly nature trails, and you get to run right past Keith Richards' house).
Thanks for the info - I am happy to know that there are places to run around the area. What time are the Westport races and New Canaan races? (I'm sure I can google...)
There's a track club too, right..Pequots?
Westport races are 8 a.m. the 10 Saturday's before Labor Day; Waveny races are 7 p.m. every Tue. exc. July 3.
For a complete schedule of CT races go to
Running by the beach is always a good bet. It's flat, the roads are nice, and it's usually a bit cooler by the water. Be sure to get a beach sticker though or you won't be able to park there. Or you can run there, if you are close enough. I do most of my running there on a route that involves Compo Road, Longshore (the golf course by the beach) and Greens Farms Road. You can look up the roads on Google maps, they make a pretty easy loop. If you REALLY want trails, then you can check out Winslow park by the intersection of the Post Road and Compo. It's really (really) small, so don't expect much. You can also run on the golf course either at night or during the late fall/winter.
The summer series is pretty ghetto, but it's a good time if you aren't looking for competitive races. You can also check out the Pequot Runner's club (http://www.pequotrunners.org/) to see what they have to offer. I think their big race is the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, but I'm not really sure. Southport by the way is between Westport and Fairfield.
What street are you moving to, by the way?
Devil's den nature preserve.

Well, I NEVER thought I'd see the words "ghetto" and "Westport" used together in my life.
Go to: http://www.westportroadrunners.org/ for the Westport Summer series web site.
Jim,you stole my thunder...Very funny stuff if you've ever been on "the gold coast."

That's how Laddie rolls.
In his pimped-out CRV w/ "TRKFLD" plates, right?
Seriously, the Westport Summer Series is racing at its purest. You can run as hard or easy as you like, and not have to worry about waiting in all kinds of lines for T-shirts, goodie bags, post-race food fests, etc. I've been to races from the Olympic Trials to most of the WMMs, and lots of road race classics, and when I get asked if there's one race I'd choose to run my answer is still Westport.
