What kind of weight lifting should I be doing in the summer to compliment my base training? How often? I'm sure just like running I should probably not put too much effort into it, but can any learned person here give me some advice?

MY advice is for you to STAY OUT OF THE WEIGHT ROOM. All that time you spend in there being a psudo-athlete is great running time wasted. How many miles you get in this summer is much more important than how many hours you wasted trying to get pretty. If you want to attract girlies, stay there, but if you are SERIOUS about being the best runner you can be, get out of the training room and onto the roads.
The muscles you "tone" in the training room as riddled with fat. When you back off from the lifting the muscle decreases but the fat stays. Unfittness comes quickly for those who lift. When you run, with all that new fat/muscle you use upper body more than you should. Improvement comes slower and you will tend to 'tie up' easier.
gerry you have got to be kidding me, when did you come up with those ideas in the 50's. coaches these days believe and studies show that lifting can increase your running economy. go back to the 50's you fossil, wake up and smell the science. dude do lifts like weighted lunges, weighted step-ups, squats, bench press, military press, curls, and a bunch of stabilizing stuff for your back and stomach. disregard the post above mine.
