Until recently, I've been out of running for approximately 16 years, since high school, basically. I started up again in March and have now established about 3-6 weeks of consistent running of 20-25 miles a week, nearly all at an aerobic pace (according to Maffetone's formula and my own gauge). My goal is to continue slowly bumping my mileage to see how much I can eventually handle.
My question is at what point, if there was a point, did you notice that there was a sharp increase in improvement with an increase in mileage. For example, have there been some of you who ran 30-40 miles a week, and not noticing much improvement, moved up to 50 miles, and then all of a sudden noticed a substantial increase in performance. In other words, was there a tipping point, where you passed a certain mileage point and experienced improvements that you hadn't experienced to that point?
I guess the reason I ask is because I don't feel like I'm making much progress where I'm at. I know I just started again, and I know 25 miles a week is not a lot. However, according to J. Daniels' mileage chart on diminishing returns, one would expect to see approximately 40-50 percent of the fitness they can expect to gain after only about 25 miles a week.
