I want to hear the answer to this one...
Is it on 1 side of the lower back?? If you are sleeping on your side when you wake up, then turnover on the other side. If the back feels relieved, then you may have an answer.
get to a whirlpool/jacuzzi type tub and positon the jet right on the lower back area. that should warm it up.
If it comes and goes, it could be arthritis. That is not necessarily a bad thing, you can work around it. See if you can get a diagnosis.

Don't try and exercise it or stretch to make it better. Just rest it. Try sitting in a comfortable chair. As the pain seems to go away lift one leg then the other. Alternate back and forth. If you feel the pain again, stop and just sit again until you are comfortable again. Start over.
If you can lift without pain try get up. If pain sit. If no pain, walk slowly. Don't stretch or seek out the pain. It will deminish as long as you don't test it.
